The AA

The AA which was founded in 1905 is the undoubtedly the UK’s largest breakdown cover provider with an average response time of 40 minutes to assist customers that break down. They claim to fix more breakdowns by the roadside than anyone which is backed up by around 3000 trained patrolmen, a number that far exceeds any of their competition.  In a recent survey of 10,772 members (who have used UK breakdown services over the past 12 months), the AA were voted top breakdown providers for the second year in a row with a satisfaction score of 84%.  They were also the breakdown company mostj likely to be voted to a friend.

The RAC

The RAC founded in 1897 were originally called the Royal Automobile Club and are currently the second largest breakdown providers in the UK with around 6.5 million members. They came second in the recent and like the AA aim to respond to breakdowns within 40 minutes of a callout.  If your vehicle is thought to be in a dangerous location or you are identified as a priority case then once of the RAC’s 1650+ trained UK patrols will do their utmost to reach you a lot sooner.

Cover definitions

Roadside - If your car breaks down anywhere in the UK you are covered for roadside assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.  The basic policy doesn’t cover you for breakdown within a pre defined distance of your home (usually between ¼ and 1 mile range of your home).

Recovery - If your vehicle can not be repaired at the roadside it will be transported along with a pre defined number of passengers to your home or any UK destination.

Home Cover - The breakdown company provides assistance if you break down at home or within a pre defined distance of your home (usually between ¼ and 1 mile range of your home).

Onward Travel - In the event that your vehicle breaks down whilst away from home, you will be provided with overnight accommodation and a replacement vehicle for a pre defined number of days, while your vehicle is being repaired.

No Claim Discount - If you do not require any form of assistance from the breakdown company throughout the course of your 12 months membership, you will be entitled to a discount when you renew your cover.

Repair Referrals - If your vehicle is unable to be repaired at the roadside, it will be towed by the recovery company to an approved garage for repair.
